So if you don’t enjoy the traditional black licorice flavour, then red licorice is for you. What is licorice exactly?

We’ve known and seen this black chewy sweet around all our lives, but many of us don’t know much about where licorice comes from. Well, that delicious aromatic licorice flavour is extracted from the root of a perennial legume called the Glycyrrhiza glabra, a plant native to North Africa, Western Asia and Southern Europe. The Greek name “glykiá ríza” actually means “sweet root”, and licorice root is inherently sweet. It is said to be over 50 times sweeter than sucrose (white table sugar)!

Licorice has long been used to flavour a range of products including drinks, confectionery and medicines. These days, many licorice-flavoured sweets are reinforced with aniseed oil, which has a similar flavour to licorice, and decreases the need to use so much licorice extract.

Is licorice good for you?

Licorice has long been used as a flavouring in medicines, and in some places, people even chew on the licorice root as a way of freshening their breath! In some traditional medicines, licorice has been used to treat viral infections, digestive problems, and a range of other conditions.
